I think this is somewhat wrong, because The "Original Plan for Lisa", which is Tracey Ullman Lisa, would make the series worse, but in reality, it's the exact opposite. Here are the list of things that are wrong about this:
1: "...the original plan for her wouldn’t have made her a likable character."
Now that is wrong. Because she wasn't even that likable in the earlier seasons when the show started in 1989, even before her vegetarianism, since people had good points and reasons to hate her in episodes such as "Moaning Lisa", "Bart vs Thanksgiving", "Lisa's Substitute", "Lisa vs Malibu Stacy", "Lisa's Pony", "I Love Lisa", etc. And people on Quora also made great points is to that she's not the Voice of Reason, and she's actually the voice of annoyance.
2: "It was only natural that the main characters of the SImpsons went through changes when the original shorts were developed into a proper TV show, and Lisa’s change was definitely necessary."
That is also wrong, because it just made her character more annoying, and more like a Mary-Sue, and her arcs were too sympathetic. So it wasn't necessary to change her character into the stereotypical intelligent good child of the family.
3: "The original plan wouldn’t have let Lisa shine and she wouldn’t have had any defining traits, and making her into the smart one of the family made way for a lot of storylines, characters, and important moments not only in Lisa’s life but in her family’s history as well."
Also wrong, since her traits weren't well defining. Especially her worst trait, Jealousy. And her storylines made the fans hate her even more for that. Plus, she doesn't do a good job at making important moments with her and her family.
Also the part where it says "Matt Groening shared they decided to make Lisa the “intelligent, talented member of the Simpsons”. It didn't work out well, and the execution was handled so poorly to her character. Not to mention she was still a feminist in the classic seasons too, such as making her centerpiece feminine. That's also a bad quality for her character. They also took away the discipline to her character too while the series fully began in 1989, which just made her a horribly written character.
That is why the Tracey Ullman version of Lisa was likely the best the writers could do with her character. I can't even think of one person who actually hated the Tracey Ullman version of her character, but there are several people who hated the classic seasons version of Lisa. No wonder why she doesn't have her page on the Incredible Characters Wiki (Especially Seasons 1-6 and 31-present) just like the rest of her family. And shouldn't her page on the Loathsome Character wiki refer her as "Lisa Simpson (Post-Tracey Ullman Shorts)" instead of "Lisa Simpson (Seasons 7-30)", and include her character from the first six seasons and Post Season 30? Well, I think it would make sense since her portrayal as smart and intelligent were terribly executed. And she would've been a hell of a lot more better if Matt Groening decided not to change her personality back in 1989, and let her stay as a Troublemaker like Bart. But at least have her portrayal as a troublemaker be done her own way instead of copying Bart. Lisa would be a much more forgivable character, if she wasn't smart nor selfish to an extreme level of bad characterization. No Jealousy, no Smartassery, No Mary-Sue stereotype, No annoyance, No Vegetarianism, No Buddhism, No out of character, No selfishness, no bullshit. Just a troublemaker in her own way, give her an actual heart like Bart, and give her some storylines that would be way better executed, and more interesting, rather than being an unlikable character. And give her more character, personality and proper development, but not like how it was in the 1989 series, instead make her personality more interesting as a troublemaker.
Brian did a way better job at being the voice of Reason in the earlier seasons of Family Guy, but Lisa didn't. And I think that Tracey Ullman Lisa is the best version of her character, and she actually does get disciplined in the shorts like in "The Funeral" for an example. It would've been more interesting to see her be a hellraiser like her brother, and female fans would enjoy her character some more, and give out a good sense of humor, but not copying Bart.
So what do you guys think of this? Do you think Screen Rant is right, or do you think Screen Rant is misunderstood about how bad the character change was? Leave a comment below, and share me your thoughts.
And Mart1997 don't bother saying "Nah, I hated lisa from tracey ullman"
