• Homer's attempt to steal the Christmas presents is a parody of the Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
• The TV special Christmas with the California Prunes is a parody of The California Raisins.
• The Year Santa Got Lost, which Homer briefly sees on TV, is a parody of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials. The character of Mr. Mailman is based on S. D. Kluger from Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, and several of the Misfit Toys from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer make cameo appearances.
• Versions of A Christmas Carol, seen on the TV, include parodies of the American sitcom Family Matters and sci-fi TV series Star Trek: The Original Series.
• The title is a reference to the saying "'Tis the Season", referring to Christmas.
• Homer mentions the song "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin on the church.
• The way how everyone sings Hark! The Herald Angels Sing at the end is similar to A Charlie Brown Christmas.

• The last time Homer promised to be the nicest guy in town was in "Children of a Lesser Clod".
• The animatic from the first act of this episode on "The Simpsons Christmas 2" DVD shows the following changes:
  • The Springfield Nuclear Power Plant causes an "acid snowfall".
  • During the decoration montage, Marge hangs mistletoe and is soon kissed by Grandpa and Homer sets up a plastic deer on the front lawn, which is shot by Cletus and his redneck friends who plan to eat it.
  • During Krusty's holiday special, Krusty remarks Kent is getting last years' holiday meal pumped out his stomach.
• This is the first time Lisa's conversion to Buddhism is mentioned since "She of Little Faith".
• This is the last episode to premiere in 2003.
• There will be a sequel to this episode in Season 30 called "'Tis the 30th Season".

Goofs

• In addition to giving Homer a DVD player, Carl also gives Homer the first season of Magnum, P.I., even though this episode aired in 2003 and the first season of Magnum, P.I. did not come out on DVD until 2004. However, it is still 2003 because Lisa mentioned it was Saturday, December 6 and December 6 was on an Saturday that year. Lisa also mentions that A Christmas Carol was written 160 years earlier. That is 1843, which is exactly 160 years before 2003.
• The Nahasapeemapetilon Family is seen celebrating Christmas, even though it is not typically observed by Hindus.
• Marge, Bart and Lisa where among the angry mob and throwing snowballs at Homer. This doesn't make sense as they're his family.
