- The episode title is a parody of William Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer's Night's Dream". It is also a reference to the Cheech & Chong film Nice Dreams. At the end of the episode Bart is dressed as Puck a character from the play.
- Lotso from Toy Story 3 is in The Crazy Cat Lady's house and later in the Simpsons house.
- The Simpsons logo is seen on the mailbox outside the Simpsons' house when Bart and Lisa are coming home from school.
- Homer mentions they should start working at 4:20, over the past few decades this has become the conventional time/date for smoking marijuana.
- Bart breaks the fourth wall that the viewers can watch this episode tomorrow (March 14, 2011) at hulu.com.
- When edited for syndication the dialogue of the truck driver regarding Marge's hoarding was cut.
- Homer laughed at a class clown performing his Cheech and Chong impression in The Front.
- This is the third episode to be banned from airing in the UK before the watershed due to drug themes. The first two were Weekend at Burnsie's and Love, Springfieldian Style.

- Homer mentions that Cheech & Chong were the Beavis and Butt-Head of their day. Beavis and Butt-Head were a mid-90s MTV show, which once had a Cheech & Chong video to review.
- The song played when Homer visualizes the "Reward from Cheech" is Basketball Jones by Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong.
- Homer plays the instrumental of the song "Low Rider" by the band War on the radio in the truck. This song is used as the theme song for the TV series George Lopez, and also appeared on famous stoner comedies Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke and Dazed and Confused.
- Crazy Cat Lady yelling out to her cats who all enter the Simpson residence is an obvious Tarzan reference.
- Marge discovers a green-and-gold pen from the Milwaukee Hilton hotel when going through the Crazy Cat Lady's stuff. This is a reference to the Green Bay Packers NFL team, which is well represented in Wisconsin.
- Homer mentions Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon from the duo Simon & Garfunkel when trying to convince Chong to forgive Cheech.
- The clip “That’s Kentertainment”, is a Play on the film series, “That’s Entertainment.
