Abe League of Their Moe |
|
Cultural References[]
- The episode title is a pun on the 1992 baseball film A League of Their Own.
- The episode's main plot was inspired by MLB's gambling scandals and notably the one involving Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, who stole over $16 million to cover his gambling debts and directly referenced with the "Shohei the Money 17" and "Othani's designated bettor" betting ad signs.
- Walkov is learning English from Family Guy and continuously says "Giggity," Quagmire's catchphrase.
- Moe refers to his Macedonian-speaking grandmother as Baba Branka. "Baba," short for babushka, is a nickname used for a person's grandmother in Slavic cultures.
- Because of his large size Moe calls Walkov a "Euro Sasquatch", a pun on Eurotrash.
- Real life brands featured include the Squatty Potty, Trojan condoms, and Hankook tires.
- Cincinnati's Reds Roof Inn is a play on the Cincinnati Reds MLB team and the Red Roof Inn hotel chain.
- When Moe mentions the MLB could expand to 50 teams, including one in Tampa, this is an implied jab at the Tampa Bay Rays, who currently do not have a permanent home due to hurricane damage sustained to Tropicana Field (their current stadium), which could take significant time to repair, as well as the team's inability to secure a deal for a new stadium, which may result in relocation if the team cannot agree to a new stadium deal in the Tampa Bay area.
- The sports drink Gren-Ade is a parody of Gatorade.
- Duo of Martin and Lewis is a reference to Martin and Lewis, the comedy double act of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
- Dead people and no longer existing businesses in Grampa Simpson's contact list are:
- Corbin Everly ("Bart's Brain")
- Edsel Dealership (model from Ford Motors which was quickly shut down and still considered one of the biggest marketing failures in business history).
- Larry the Barfly (died in "Cremains of the Day")
- Maude Flanders (died in "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily")
- Pan Am (defunct airline)
- Rabbi Krustofsky (died in "Clown in the Dumps")
- Woolworth's (defunct variety store chain)
- When Moe lies and says that Walkov is encouraging people to drive responsibly, he says "click it or ticket", which is a campaign slogan of NHTSA.
Trivia[]
- Nevena Neskoska who composed You, the entry from North Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, was the consultant for this episode.[1][2]
Continuity[]
- Matt Lauer was previously seen when Homer and Bart were searching for any evidence to help Krusty at the World Court which included his appearance on The Today Show. ("Elementary School Musical"). Matt Lauer's firing from The Today Show due to sexual harassment was previously mentioned when Homer was talking to Marge about scary true stories. ("Woo-hoo Dunnit?")
- Multiple clones of Raphael are working at the stadium. This references the non-canon reveal that Raphael has multiple clones, which were born as larvae underground and assigned various jobs on the surface world. ("Lisa the Boy Scout")
- Moe is fluent in Macedonian because he learnt it from his mean grandmother Baba Branka, which is somewhat similar to how Milhouse learned to speak Italian from his mean Tuscan grandmother Nana Sophia. ("The Last of the Red Hat Mamas")
Goofs[]
- The Springfield Isotopes are playing in Major League Baseball (MLB) and have been since as far back as 1944, but this is inconsistent with the Springfield Isotopes being a minor league team since the team first appeared in "Dancin' Homer".
- The Springfield Isotopes were persuadably named because of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, but the team had the name in 1944, a decade before the first commercial nuclear power plants ever opened and teenaged Homer's high school guidance counselor told him the new local nuclear power plant was going to be opening soon.
- Abe mentions that he doesn't have living people in his contacts, although he must have Bart as a contact if he called to invite him to the game.
