When Willie spoke of his views on Scottish Independence, he referred to Alex Salmond as a 'Champion of Scottish Independence' and that he may be a good leader, however, he stated that he himself may be a better leader as he "stands in the grand tradition of William Wallace and Andy Murray".

Alex Salmond was the First Minister of Scotland from 2007 until 2014. He stepped down when 55% of the Scottish electorate voted against Scottish Independence. He was replaced by then Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. He also served two terms as leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), firstly for 10 years between 1990 and 2000, and secondly between 2004 and 2014.
