This was considered too violent to show when the episode first aired, so it was replaced with a frozen shot of the kids looking down as Homer falls again. The missing footage would later crop up on the season four episode, So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show.
Homer's failure to complete the jump was mostly due to him losing his momentum when he celebrates halfway through the jump.
