Trivia[]

  • At the beginning, the football game that Homer was watching was the Denver Broncos vs. the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams met in Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2, 2014, but instead of Denver beating Seattle, Seattle beat Denver 43-8.
  • Carl has a tattoo of Looney Tunes character Foghorn Leghorn on his right thigh, with Carl even asking if he can cover it up with a bandage and claim that his character had previously suffered a stab injury to avoid a potential copyright infringement lawsuit for the film.
  • This episode was rated TV-14 on American TV, for the scene of Homer getting his hands hammered and the scenes of the Mafia filming a porno movie at his house.
  • The film Lemony Lick-it's A Series of Horny Events is an obvious parody of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
  • Louie, Fat Tony and Legs -- after Homer foolishly asked them if they weren't the Gay Mafia -- smash both of Homer's hands with two hammers in rage. The Italian Mafia has strict rules against homosexuality, with the guilty member often being put to death.
  • The title of this episode comes from the 1987 novel, The Bonfire of the Vanities, a book written by Tom Wolfe.
  • The film Carl mentions "Fahrenheit 9 on 1" is a reference to the novel Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore. Coincidentally, this episode premiered four years after the 9/11 attacks.
  • Homer does the "Outhouse gag" which Abe did in the episode, "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part Two)".
  • This is the first episode where we actually see a human vomiting, in other episodes it's hidden.
  • At Santa's Village, Bart asks Santa, "Whatcha reading Santa?" Santa replies, Tom Clancy's Op-Center. In "Sweets and Sour Marge," it's revealed that this is Moe's favorite book.

Goofs[]

  • In the scenes at Moe's Tavern, Homer' beer cup changes height between shots.
  • When Moe gives Homer the tickets, he gives him three. But when Homer gives Marge the tickets, he gives her four.
    • It could be possible that the fourth ticket was hidden behind one on the three tickets or that Moe gave Homer the fourth ticket off-screen and if he did than he could've forgotten about the fourth one in the first place.
  • When Bart asks Marge why the doctors put a blanket over Santa's head, Maggie disappears.
  • Homer left the door open. But in the close-up of him and Bart after Marge leaves, the door is closed.
  • Caleb throws his shirt at the sand. But when Marge saw him as he saves the manatee, the shirt is not on the sand.
  • The cable of the telephone in the cab changes length between shots.
  • One of the manatees vomits on the sea. But in the next scene, the vomit is gone.
  • At the end, some water that is dropping on the floor disappears immediately.
  • Manatees aren't called dugongs. Dugongs are a different species that are related to manatees, but live in the ocean.
    • Technically, the animals featured should've been dugongs instead of manatees.
