- Marge selling off the X-Cellent Burger stock prior to the chain's national launch is based off of the 2020 congressional insider trading scandal, where several US senators (Kelly Loeffler, David Perdue, Bill Burr, Dianne Feinstein, and Jim Inhofe) were accused of selling off stocks in companies following an insider briefing during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, knowing that some of their stocks would be negatively affected by the pandemic. Sens. Loeffler, Perdue, and John Hoeven also bought stock in companies involved in medical-related fields during that time. All of those Senators were investigated but were cleared of any wrongdoing.
