Canada is the second largest country in the world (in terms of land mass) and located north of the continental United States of America. The Simpsons have gone to Canada and specifically Toronto in "The Bart Wants What it Wants" and Calgary in "I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can" and Vancouver in "Boy Meets Curl" and Niagara Falls (across the Niagara River from Upstate New York) and Windsor (across the Detroit River from Detroit) in "D'oh Canada".

History[]

Homer referred to Canada as "America Junior"[1] and another time when apologizing to Queen Elizabeth II for wrecking her carriage, he also disdainfully said of Canada, "But we Americans are England's children. I know we don't call as often as we should, and we aren't as well-behaved our goody-two-shoes brother, Canada-- who, by the way, has never had a girlfriend. I'm just saying..."[2] He also called Canada, "the Mexico of Alaska."[3]

A recurring joke is Homer being bored by things happening in Canada such as skipping the barbeque at the Flanderses' to watch CFL Draft or trying to get out of an awkward conversation with Marge by reading "Canada to Hold Referendum" in the newspaper.[4]

Another recurring gag is similarities between Canada and Ned Flanders.. In Canada Ned meets a nearly identical Canadian stranger with the same overly good-natured gibberish way of speaking.[5] Kent Brockman refers to Canada as "America's Ned Flanders to the North" during his news report.[6]

Bart, Milhouse, and Martin tell their parents that they going by their school to attend the National Grammar Rodeo in Canada as a cover story.[7]

Greta Wolfcastle breaks off her relationship with Bart and heads to Canada because her dad Rainier Wolfcastle is shooting his latest movie in Toronto so Bart follows her to try to win back and the rest of the Simpsons come with him to sightsee in Toronto.[1]

The Canadian national anthem was also sung at the end of a baseball game after a fight broke out because of the Pre-Teen Braves and the Cavalry Kids. Homer, Grampa, Apu and Ned all visited Canada to get prescription drugs from there into Springfield but they got arrested at the border when it was discovered their van was full of pills (Homer and Grampa were arrested again, namely because they crashed their plane and woke Chief Wiggum up).[5]

Vancouver is hosting the Winter Olympics where team Simpson-Skinner complete in curling and won the gold medal.[9]

Bart tells Lisa his mnemonic "Ouiet Nerds Burp Only Near School." for the 4 original provinces when Canada became self-governing on July 1, 1867: Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario, Nova Scotia.

Springfield's minor league baseball team the Isotopes is threatening to move to Moose Jaw.[10]

Patty and Selma have kidnapped Richard Dean Anderson, star of their favorite TV show MacGyver, but then he will not leave. He is finally broken by slides of different carriages from their vacation in Canada to the Remington Carriage Museum.[11]

Lisa pretends to be from Canada as Europe is under the impression that United States has made some stupid choices in the past, however, her cover is blown by Homer when waves the American flag.[12]

Mr. Burns wants Smithers to get him a quarter ton of lake ice from Northern Canada and Smithers has harrowing misadventures bringing it back.[13]

Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are sightseeing from the windows of the crown on the Statue of Liberty and Bart yells out, "Hey, immigrants! Beat it! Country's full!" to a group of anachronistic turn-of-the-20th century foreigners on the deck of a steamer. The captain tells them, "Okay, folks, you heard the lady. Back into the hold. We'll try Canada" which is greeted by disappointed moans.[14]

In 1860 fugitive slave Virgil crosses the border into freedom in Canada. Before fleeing he asked Mabel Simpson to come with him which Mabel accepted and they stay in Canada for the rest of their lives. Mabel marries Virgil after she divorced Hiram Simpson from Canada and getting just one of his shoes in the divorce settlement although Hiram kept the laces.[15]

When the Simpsons go to Niagara Falls, Lisa goes over the waterfalls. She is rescued by a Mountie and given political asylum in Canada while recovering in the hospital. When Marge goes to Canada to rescue Lisa, they begin to re-evaluate their love for America. Later she bring the same Mountie to show-and-tell. The Mountie has brought back Nelson's dad who was hiding out in Medicine Hat.[6]
