Cape Canaveral (formerly Cape Kennedy and Cape Arbuckle) is an Air Force base (now Space Force base) in Florida.
History[]
When Homer Simpson and Barney Gumble were trained for their space mission as part of NASA's push for better ratings by having recruiting more relatable people as astronauts. The whole Simpson family relocated to live in the base housing during Homer's training and mission.[1]
An overly annoyed father tells his misbehaving children in the backseat, "If you kids can't keep your hands to yourselves I'm going to turn this car around and there'll be no Cape Canaveral for anybody!"[2]
The Springfield Air and Space Museum has an audiovisual display on on the history of flight and created audiovisual materials including the IMAX movie at Cape Canaveral.[3]
Behind the Laughter[]
Quoting S Morgan Friedman:
- "Cape Canaveral was formerly named Cape Kennedy, and before that was named Cape Canaveral (yes, the name was changed, then changed back). But it was never named Cape Arbuckle. Fatty Arbuckle was a popular silent-movie comedian whose career was ruined after he was tried for the rape & murder of actress Virginia Rappe at a wild party. Even though he was found not guilty, he was essentially blacklisted, and his very name became disreputable. So, the writers were making fun of the Cape’s name-changing by IMAGINING that it was once called Cape Arbuckle in honour of Fatty, but changed to Canaveral after the scandal. There is also an implicit comparison between Kennedy’s sexual scandals and Arbuckle’s."[4]
