Carrie Rachel Brownstein (born September 27, 1974) is an American actress, comedian, musician, singer-songwriter and writer. Brownstein wrote and appeared in a series of comedy sketches alongside Saturday Night Live alumni Fred Armisen which were developed into the satirical comedy TV series Portlandia. The series went on to win Emmy and Peabody Awards. She also starred as Genevieve Cantrell in the 2015 film Carol.
Brownstein is also best known as one of the songwriters, two lead vocalists and guitarists of the American indie rock/punk rock band Sleater-Kinney, who have received universal acclaim as one of the best and most influential bands of the 21st century.
In The Simpsons, she guest starred as Emily in the Season 24 episode "The Day the Earth Stood Cool" alongside fellow Portlandia star Fred Armisen, who voiced Terrence.
