Don Mattingly was first baseman for the New York Yankees from 1982 to 1995. He played himself in the episode "Homer at the Bat". Mr. Burns hired him for the power plant softball team, but inexplicably thought Mattingly had sideburns despite these being invisible to anyone else. Burns ultimately threw Mattingly off the team for refusing to shave his "sideburns." While leaving, Mattingly wryly noted that he still preferred Burns to George Steinbrenner.
Mattingly's refusal to shave his "sideburns" in "Homer at the Bat" was inspired by a real-life incident in 1991 when Mattingly was benched by Yankees management after he refused to cut off his mullet.
