Dr. Nussbaum was a psychiatrist. Among his patients were Mr. Burns and the Simpson family.

Mr. Burns went to Dr. Nussbaum's clinic to discuss his anger issues, but he gives up on Burns' case after seventy years, and concludes that he will never be able to have a family. As soon as Mr. Burns leaves the room, the doctor collapses and dies.

During his funeral, the Simpsons reveal that he was also their doctor and he helped them to communicate. Mr. Burns then says that the least he could do is to pay for his funeral. He the reveals that his tombstone has "Paid for by C. Montgomery Burns" written on it. This angers everyone at the funeral and Mr. Burns has to flee from the cemetery with Smithers.
