The Electronic Automatic Robotic Lighthouse, E.A.R.L. for short, is a computer which controls the light in Springfield's lighthouse. When Homer learned that the lighthouse was operated by "Earl", he assumed the name was that of a person who he could relieve his loneliness with. He was disappointed to learn E.A.R.L. was nothing more than a machine.
