Ernest Goes Somewhere Cheap is a comedy movie based on the Jim Varney character Ernest P. Worell.

Plot

The little of the plot that is shown is Ernest entering a public library, and telling his buddy Vern they'll stay there for a while, as well as Ernest requesting that Vern help him get his head out of the toilet.

The Simpson family went to see this movie, although they were bothered by a rude man smoking a cigar and loudly laughing at the inanity onscreen, prompting Homer (who himself was smoking a much larger cigar from Knoxville Fair 1983) to tell him off, only to end up laughing even more at the toilet scene, causing the man to tell Homer off and reveal himself as a recently paroled Sideshow Bob, to the family's horror. Bart then deduced that Bob was the one responsible for sending him threatening letters in blood, causing Marge to tell him to stay away from her son.

Behind the laughter

  • It's odd that Sideshow Bob would go see the movie at all, let alone laugh at it, since he was not known to like low-brow comedies. Presumably, he only went to see the movie simply because the Simpsons were seeing it and he wanted to make their lives miserable.
  • The overall scene that the movie was used in was derived from a similar scene from the 1991 Cape Fear remake, where Max Cady also went to low-brow comedy movie and bothered his target's family by smoking and laughing uproariously at the movie in front of them (in that case, the movie that was being watched was Problem Child, and unlike in the 1991 remake, the two parties immediately interacted with each other).
