The episode title is a reference to the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop.
The couch gag is a parody of the opening for Game of Thrones.
This is the fourth episode which revolves around a Simpson being an artist. The previous three are Brush with Greatness, Mom and Pop Art and Ice Cream of Margie (with the Light Blue Hair). Like Homer in Mom and Pop Art, his artwork damaged Springfield. However Bart got caught by the police while in Mom and Pop Art he wondered about whether Homer's art would be considered vandalism. Also in Mom and Pop Art, Jasper Johns was a thief where in this episode Shepard Fairey was on the opposite end of the law. Brush with Greatness and Ice Cream of Margie (with the Light Blue Hair) also feature a masterpiece of Homer.
The last time Homer placed Bart in a pet habitat was in Home Away from Homer.
