Family Therapy is the forty-fifth Simpsons short and originally aired on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 23, 1989.

Plot

Homer tricks the family into going to see family therapist B.F. Sherwood PhD by saying they are going out for frosty chocolate milkshakes. Homer seeks an answer to the family problem of not laughing anymore. Sherwood tells Bart he can take at least one mint from the mint bowl in his office and encourages the family to take a "deep cleansing breath" after noticing the Simpson family's "deep-seeded hostility," but Bart eats too many mints and says "I ain't leaving till that bowl's empty" after Sherwood claims "don't you think you've had enough mints son?" Homer angrily tells Bart to put the mints back after Sherwood claims he's had enough. After Bart ruins the bowl of mints by spitting them out right into bowl. Lisa kicks Sherwood in the leg after scolding Bart for ruining the bowl of mints for everyone, Homer scolds Sherwood for calling Lisa a borderline psychotic, Bart shoots him with his dart gun because he dislikes him, and Lisa cuts his tie with scissors much to Marge's horror; Dr. Sherwood angrily asks them to leave his office. Once the family are outside, they break into laughter.
