Cultural References[]

  • The song "I Feel Free" by Cream plays during the montage showing Homer alone at home and during the episode's ending.
  • Homer and Julia eating the spaghetti together is a reference to the Disney film Lady and the Tramp. This was also referenced in Two Dozens and One Greyhound, Little Big Girl and Love, Springfieldian Style.
  • When Smithers is changing the face of the children to "something else", he changes them to Dr. Zoidberg, Abraham Lincoln and Mr. Potato Head.
  • The Oculus Frink (or Froculus) is a reference to the Oculus Rift.
  • The Wilhelm scream is heard from one of the creatures in Hell.
  • Mr. Burns does a Nazi salute when marching in one of the virtual reality games he was playing, most likely meaning that he was a Nazi soldier or follower in his headset.
  • Homer watches at least five out of the seven movies from the Police Academy franchise at once, though "The Springfield Connection" revealed that Homer thought the Police Academy movies were painful and disturbing (while Spaceballs was fun and exciting) while "Marge Be Not Proud" showed that Homer did like the Police Academy movies, but only because of Michael Winslow's character who made sound effects with his mouth.
  • When Homer is laying on the roof, he says, "Snoopy knew what he was doing, all right". This is a reference to a common gag of the Peanuts series where Snoopy does lots of activities on the roof of his doghouse.

Trivia[]

  • It is revealed who the neighbors behind The Simpson House are.
  • Maggie talks once again in this episode, and in this episode's case, she spoke her very first sentences. This is one of the episodes in which Maggie's dialogue is considered canon and therefore to actually happen within the show's universe; the others being "Lisa's First Word", "Home Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily", "Lisa Gets an "A"", "Coming to Homerica", and "There Will Be Buds".
  • The eyes of Mr. Burns' painting inside his guest house moves.
  • Smithers has at least some knowledge of programming, as he managed to make Burns' virtual reality game by himself. However, it is skeptical if he had been given help or not.
  • Similar to Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky's last words in "Clown in the Dumps", Dr. Nussbaum's last words were "Eh".
  • This is one of the only instances of nudity in the show, albeit censored, though Marge's nude scene was cut on UK airings.

Goofs[]

  • The Absolut Krusty bottles on the shelf behind Moe disappear between scenes.
  • When Julia throws Homer a beer, Homer grabs a toy rocket on the roof to hide his crotch, but a few scenes earlier, the green Frisbee was the only thing on the roof.
  • The door to Dr. Nussbaum's office changes from brown to white between scenes.
