- The title of this episode is a reference to the 1993 song "Full Moon, Empty Heart" by Belly.
- The prom theme of "Enchantment Under the Retractable Hoops" is a reference to the "Enchantment Under the Sea" school dance in Back to the Future.
- Engine Head is a parody of Motorhead.
- Homer's attorney in his lawsuit against Builders' Barn is a parody of Ben Matlock (a fictional character played by Andy Griffith).
- Comic Book Guy, as jury foreman, says the jury is disappointed this turned out to a real trial instead of a hidden camera comedy reality show is a reference to Jury Duty.
- The scene of Agnes Skinner getting Jasper and the old Jewish man to kiss her and then kiss each other is parodying a scene from Challengers.
- Homer saying, "I sold out my Dad for avocado. Oil that is, green gold, Tex-Mix tea." is a reference to lyrics "Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea." from The Ballad of Jed Clampett aka the song from the opening credits of The Beverly Hillbillies. A banjo sting from the theme song is heard.
- Avocado Aficionado is parodying Cigar Aficionado and Homer's cover photo is parodying the fantasy sequence of Mena Suvari covered by rose petals from American Beauty.

- The image on Homer's Wiccapedia article is him with his head stuck in a drawbridge. ("Lost Our Lisa")
- Homer pleading to Helen Lovejoy and the other parents, "Won't someone please not think of the children?" is a play on Helen Lovejoy's catchphrase, "Won't someone please think of the children?"
- In the floating timeline and Bart remaining a 10-year-old boy, he is unaware of Johnny Carson despite having met him ("Krusty Gets Kancelled") and watching his late night talk show i.e. "Lisa's Pony", "Lisa's First Word" (as a toddler), "Treehouse of Horror II" (non-canon during Homer's bad dream).
- Squeaky-Voiced Teen is named Andrew Teen and his mother and father are shown. The character is rarely named with some exceptions such as a nametag with "Steve" ("Beware My Cheating Bart"), Old Man Peterson ("Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy") and Mr. Friedman ("G.I. (Annoyed Grunt)"). Lunchlady Doris was also hinted to his mother ("Team Homer" episode was the time Doris Grau voiced her).
