Cultural References[]

  • The episode's title is a reference to the film documentary The Girls in the Band and the episode itself is a strong parody of Whiplash, with J.K. Simmons playing a similar role as an overbearing band director.
  • The Breaking Bad intro is parodied before the beginning of the first commercial break.
  • The Knight Rider theme song is played.
  • The overweight kid's formal wear unravels while playing the trumpet really hard references Giovanni Jones' formal wear unraveling while singing a really high G note from the 1949 Bugs Bunny cartoon, Long-Haired Hare.
  • Homer has a hallucination at work where he talks to a bartender who encourages him to kill his family, a reference to The Shining made even more plain by a subsequent appearance by Jack Torrance swinging a bloody axe as Homer talks to Smithers and Mr. Burns.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode written by Nancy Cartwright.
  • This is the last apperance of Terri and Sherri before the passing of their voice actress, Russi Taylor.
