  • This episode title references a 1988 drama film Gorillas in the Mist.
  • Aquatraz Water Park is a reference to the island Alcatraz Island, which is San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, California, United States.
  • Shame-u is a reference to the killer whale Shamu, who died on August 16, 1971.
  • A young Homer sings (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay by the singer and songwriter Otis Redding.
  • The boat salesman sings "Drunken Salesman", which is parody of the song Drunken Sailor.
  • Groundskeeper Willie helping to free the whale is a reference to the family drama film Free Willy.

  • In the episode "The Winter of Our Monetized Content", Homer stated that he will purchase a boat on the 3rd November, which he did in this, which also aired on the 3rd November.
  • Carl Carlson's sister and Lenny Leonard's sister who appeared at the beginning of the episode "The Blue and the Gray" return in this episode.
  • On the other hand however, there is a continuity error evolving Hans Moleman's age. In a previous episode he states that he is 30 years old, but in this episode he says that he is 88.
