- “Only a nerdo would know that.”
- ―Hubert Wong
Hubert Wong is a former background character-turn recurring character in The Simpsons. He is one of the nerdy kids at Springfield Elementary School. He is a 2nd grader in Mrs. Hoover's class and is friends with Lisa Simpson, who happens to have the same birthday as him. As one of the school nerds, he regularly gets bullied by Nelson Muntz.
Biography[]
In the "Treehouse of Horror XX" segment "Dial 'M' for Murder or Press '#' to Return to Main Menu", Miss Hoover chooses him instead of Lisa to represent the class at the national reading roundup. Out of jealousy, Lisa gets mad and accuses him of cheating, on account of his using a tutor named Amelia from some placed called "The Homework Factory". She also repeatedly calls him an "asterisk", which gets her sent to detention.
In "Black-Eyed, Please", Hubert made a non-speaking cameo. He was seen in class, when Skinner came in and announced that in light is Miss Hoover's absence, she'd be replaced by Ms. Cantwell as a substitute.
In "#YOLO", Kent Brockman pulls up security footage of Mrs. Krabappel's class on 11/01/2013 at 10:37:20AM. In it, Jimbo, Kearney, and Dolph cheat on their tests. Hubert is in the background, taking his test, now as a much older 5th grader.
In "The Kid is All Right", Hubert was one of the students in the school auditorium, watching Lisa and Isabel's report on Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
In "Yellow Subterfuge", Hubert was in the audience when Principal Skinner made an announcement that Springfield Elementary School would be taking a field trip to see the naval submarine The U.S.S. Tom Clancy. His name was also seen on the list.
In "The Yellow Badge of Cowardge", Hubert came in second place in The Race Around the School. Due to an animation error, his hair was brunette instead of raven.
In the couch gag for "My Fare Lady", Hubert was seen in the baseball field, standing behind Milhouse during the pan from the road to The Simpson House.
In "Mathlete's Feat", Hubert was one of the members of the Action Fractions at the math tournament against the Waverly Hills No-Equals. He used an inhaler, during his introduction. He was disappointed when his team lost, not scoring a single point. He was later seen using an iPad when the school went digital. He was also just barely seen behind Principal Skinner, when the school was singing the song, "Every Single Living Creature". Later in the episode, Groundskeeper Willie became the new math teacher and trained Hubert, along with the other Action Fractions, (who were now led by Bart Simpson), for their upcoming rematch against the No-Equals. This time, the Action Fractions won and they celebrated with a pizza party at Luigi's.
Hubert had his first speaking role in "The Girl Code", where he was in the the school's new computer-coding class and was surprised to see that his teacher, Quinn Hopper was a woman.
In "Lisa the Veterinarian", Huber was swimming with water wings at Chlorine Dreams Indoor Water Park. At the end of the episode, he, along with Milhouse, Sherri, and Terri, were pallbearers for Nibbles.
In "Mr. Lisa's Opus", Lisa had a flashback to first grade, where everybody forgot it was her birthday. In Ms. Myles' class, it seemed that her class remembered her birthday but the class actually remembered Hubert's birthday. Hubert's mom and dad also came down to give him cupcakes. Lisa was went to the principal's office for crying during the event and was also denied one of Hubert's cupcakes. In a flash-forward to the future, Luigi remembered it was Lisa's birthday because they had the same birthday. An adult Hubert Wong also showed up to give Lisa a cupcake, which she finally got to eat this time.
In "Krusty the Clown", Hubert worked for the school newspaper, The Daily Fourth Gradian, and wrote a 12 part series on the gravy in the cafeteria called "A Long Way Brown: Requiem for a Lunch". Lisa complimented his work for answering so much, while also raising so many more questions. When Billy came in as the new lead editor for the newspaper, he fired Hubert on the spot for having too much talent. Lisa chided Billy for this, since she believed Hubert to be a good journalist.
In "Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy", Hubert was one of the fans at Krusty Kon, waiting in line to ask a question at Krusty's panel. Hubert, along with everyone else hung his head sadly and walked off, when Krusty got sick of answering questions and closed it off. He also booed with everyone else, when he heard about the all-female reboot of The Itchy & Scratchy Show. He was later seen at the Van Houten House and became a member of Milhouse's Boys Rights Association to boycott the reboot. In the ending credits, he was seen at the pizza party, where he, along with all the other boys, was disappointed to hear that the girls don't envy their gender.
In "Three Dreams Denied", Hubert was seen as one of the students in Dewey Largo's music class.
In "Sorry Not Sorry", Hubert had his second speaking role (and first speaking role, when voiced by Rosalie Chiang), where he made a presentation for show and tell, saying that he was inspired by The Masked Singer. He wore a jack-o-lantern on his head and then freaked out, when he failed to get it off. During Lisa's presentation, Groundskeeper Willie helped Hubert to finally get his mask off. After which, he started dancing to the song, "Gladys West".
In "When Nelson Met Lisa", Hubert had his first major role in a flash-forward to the future, where he was engaged to Lisa and was now a wildly successful visionary tech-giant, who invented the ePhone and won person of the year. They met with Nelson on a train and Hubert bragged to Nelson abut how he won the heart of Lisa. It was learned that Hubert proposed to Lisa on the moon and wrote "Marry Me" in the sands of the Sahara Desert so largely, that it could be seen from space. Hubert also spend $20,000,000 on space suits, where the helmets could mold together and they could kiss. Hubert would later go on to mock Nelson for having a mother who was a stripper and a father with a second family, which got him wedgied on the coat rack. Hubert was later shown to be a rather corrupt businessman, who overworked his employees for very little pay, which Lisa took serious issue with, so she dumped him for Nelson. Hubert later teleported back to where Lisa was and begged for her to come back, claiming to have changed himself for the better with electro-shock therapy, though it caused a few malfunctions. Hubert revealed that he had turned the ePhone company into a charitable donation and that he had also kept Lisa's report from the 2nd grade, where she laid out her plans to save humanity. At the wedding of Sophie and Jimbo, Lisa met with Nelson again and started to have feelings for him again, while also exhibiting disinterest in Hubert, who was on his phone, ignoring her. She later ran out of the church and ran after Nelson to get back together him him again, ditching Hubert once and for all.
In "McMansion & Wife", Hubert had another major role, where he became a cyberbully on Idiotsayswhat.org and became an unlikely ally of Nelson, to help him with his regular bullying against Bart and Lisa. Lisa was surprised to see Hubert turn on her like this but Hubert claimed that Nelson forced him into helping him, giving him a swirly. Hubert and Lisa would then get into a nerd war with each other to see who could become the superior cyberbully and officially dominate the school. In the middle of their fight, the two of them collectively realized that what they were doing was wrong and would also look really bad on a college application and finally decided to stop cyberbullying all together. Hubert then became friends with Lisa again and vowed to help her family combat the Lambuggini company from doing a renovation on Evergreen Terrace, which got him rewarded with pumpkin stickers. Hubert did research on Evergreen Terrace and learned that this was where Jebediah Springfield first founded Springfield, making it a historic site, illegal to renovate.
In "Thirst Trap: A Corporate Love Story", Hubert was seen in the gymnasium with Martin, when the Lifeboat company started installing Lifeboat Liquid in the school water fountains. He, along with the other students, attempted to drink from one of the water fountains before Homer shut the water off, saving them from all being poisoned to death, (a visual that was explored in a fake-out scene that was only made for the trailer).
In "Iron Marge", Hubert was seen in the park, flying a kite of a Chinese dragon with his parents. Homer reported this as a threat, leading to The Wongs fleeing the park.
Future[]
In the future, Hubert got engaged to Lisa Simpson on The Moon. He also became an extremely influential tech-giant, inventing the ePhone, which revolutionized the world. However, he became a corrupt businessman, who tortured his workers, leading Lisa to divorce him. She took him back for a short time but split up with him again at the wedding of Jimbo Jones and Sophie Krustofsky, where she ultimately married Nelson Muntz instead.
Appearance[]
Hubert Wong is a short little Asian kid with, pale skin, almond eyes, and raven hair. He usually wears a polo shirt, (that comes in various colors such as blue, lavender, red, maroon and white) brown khakis, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Hubert Wong is a nerdy and studious kid, who, like the other nerds at Springfield Elementary School, is very knowledgeable, tech-savvy, and often times, embarrassingly dorky. He is good friends with Lisa Simpson and is in a few of her nerd clubs with her, such as the computer-coding class, the Action Fractions math team, and the National Reading Roundup group. Hubert was also established to be desperate for approval in "McMansion & Wife". Hubert is also rather unethical at times, doing things like cyberbullying in "McMansion & Wife" and running a corrupt organization in "When Nelson Met Lisa". Hubert has also demonstrated misogyny in episodes like "The Girl Code", when he was appalled at having a female teacher for his computer-coding class and in "Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy", when he opposed the all-female reboot of The Itchy & Scratchy Show and joined a men's rights association to have it boycotted. However, his bad behavior happens in seldom and he never really outperforms the other students in troublemaking. Overall, Hubert is just a kid, who's occasionally misguided but ultimately headed for a successful life, graduation from a prestigious college university, getting a career as a visionary tech-giant, and becoming person of the year in the future.
