Lawrence "Larry" Dalrymple[1] was one of the two barflies usually seen at Moe's Tavern, along with Sam. Larry had a balding head, and he was 42 years old, just like Sam. He appeared as a background character in several episodes, with little to be known about him until his death in "Cremains of the Day."

Biography[]

Larry was referred to as the ear bender.[2] Larry was talked about being stupid, glum and weird. He rarely speaks. He was one of the people in Moe's Tavern who ogles Marge Simpson and exclaims "Oh, a chick!" in "Bart Gets Hit by a Car". Larry was the tallest of the barflies; he has little black streaks of hair and wears a red jacket. In the episode "The Bob Next Door", he ends up in prison along with Krusty the Clown and Kirk Van Houten for an unknown reason. During "Some Enchanted Evening", Moe Szyslak refers to him as a pig, among Homer Simpson and Barney Gumble. In "Radioactive Man", after a flashback sequence explaining why Moe failed at becoming a movie star, the patrons can be heard commenting indistinctly and at the end, in one rare, speaking role, Larry can be heard saying "that makes sense". Another time, in "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)", when Homer enters Moe's Tavern in search of a soul mate, the other patrons there give one word answers of what they are to him in lieu of soul mates. In Larry's instance, he responds, "Colleague."

Larry was mainly seen in the background at Moe's Tavern usually drinking beer. He rarely speaks, only speaking sometimes in a few episodes. He was one of the barflies along with Sam the barfly. He also mainly has a very dumb and drunk look about him. He was usually also in the back corner of the bar with Sam drinking beer as well.

Trivia[]

  • Larry speaks in only three episodes in the entire series. In the episode "Bart Gets Hit by a Car", the late Phil Hartman provides his voice when Marge enters Moe's to see Homer and Larry catcalls, "Oh, a chick! [wolf whistles] Woooo!" In "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)", he says one word, "Colleague". In "Simpson Tide", he says "Hey, this stupid machine took my money!" in Apu's "loved ones" flashback.
  • In "Duffless" and "Moe Letter Blues", one shot shows two Larrys visible.
  • In "Cremains of the Day", he had his first and only major role, wherein he died at the beginning of the episode and didn't have any dialogue. However, we still learned a lot about him;
    • His cause of death is unknown. He was shown alive at the episode's opening shot, drinking beer. However, moments later, when Moe kicked everyone out of the bar, he was still sitting in place there, didn't move a muscle, didn't blink his eyes and didn't even flinch when Moe poked him in the eye with a broom handle. It was readily apparent that Larry was dead when he tipped forward and his face landed on the bar.
    • His last name was revealed to be "Dalrymple".
    • He has a mother who is still alive, named Iris Dalrymple. She is a friendly lady who heard endless stories from Larry about his friends at Moe's Tavern.
    • Larry liked fishing.
    • Larry's address was 652 8th Avenue, the same building Kurt Hardwick and Ethan Ballantyne, the two New Zealander counselors from Lisa's performing arts camp Expressions, also lived. ("Elementary School Musical")
    • Even though Larry had almost never talked to Homer, Lenny, Carl, or Moe, he always considered himself to be the best of friends with them and an official member of the barfly group, which he called "Moe's Bros".
    • Larry's ash urn had several blue sapphires in it and it was later revealed that Larry had been a gem smuggler working for Fat Tony.
