Cultural References

• The song playing right before Bart gets mud all over Nelson is "Metal on Metal" by Canadian heavy metal band Anvil.
• During the episode "Hoop Screams" from the The Itchy & Scratchy Show:
  • The title is a parody of the 1994 basketball-related documentary film Hoop Dreams.
  • The referee is a zebra, a reference to "zebra" being a common slang term for officials in many sports (due to them generally wearing black-and-white striped uniforms).
  • The mouse player #23 is a clear reference to Michael Jordan, who wore #23 for most of his playing career, and was renowned for his flying slam dunks, particularly for starting his leap for the hoop at the free throw line or beyond. The mouse player makes the dunk with his tongue hanging out, another one of Jordan's mannerisms.
  • The mice players' pouring blood over their coach is a reference to the "Gatorade shower" custom of players pouring Gatorade or some other liquid over their coach to celebrate a win.
• Krusty's sponsor is the Texxon family of gas stations. This is a parody of the American natural resources company Exxon.
• Homer mentions Alex Trebek.
• A kite with a picture of the famous duo Sonny & Cher is among Marge's stuff.
• Principal Skinner bought trophies from other schools to fill the case. Among them was one from Harvard University.
• Maggie tries to use a Transformers robot and a Slinky to replace the missing Baby Musthave doll from The Happy Little Elves series.
• The movement O Fortuna from Carl Orff's cantata Carmina Burana is heard when Lisa is looking at Marge's scrapbook.

Trivia

• This episode's title is similar to another Simpson episode: "Homer Simpson, This Is Your Wife".
• Running Gag: Homer pretending to be a magician, as he tells Marge that if she looks in her purse she'll find the seven of clubs and then planting the seven of clubs in Marge's purse (Homer fails though, as Marge noticed him planting the card) and possibly Lisa's lunchbox.
• Homer tells Lisa that he ate a slice of wedding cake Marge was keeping in the freezer (much to Marge's anger). There was also a slice of wedding cake in the freezer that Marge showed Homer in "Natural Born Kissers".
• When Lisa says that if she attends Cloisters Academy, she'll make her old self look like Bart, leading Homer to respond "That'll be one weird kid." This is a reference to Lisa being a female version of Bart in the Tracey Ullman shorts and in the earliest episodes.

Goofs

• Marge is surprised to hear Nelson is a bully but she referred to him as Bart's bully in "Sleeping with the Enemy", referred to him as a thug in "Bart the Mother", and Bart told Marge about getting bullied by Nelson in "Bart the General".
• When Nelson confronts Bart, the two walk past a wall of closed lockers, but when Nelson changes direction, he walks into an open locker that should have remained closed.
