- This is the first episode Bart is seen in footie pajamas.
Cultural References[]
- Besides bearing the derogatory term for "cops", most likely because the head coach is Chief Wiggum, Bart's team name, the Mighty Pigs, is a parody of both the Disney film The Mighty Ducks, and the professional NHL team the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, now called Anaheim Ducks.
- Large sections of the episode are references to The Mighty Ducks film. Milhouse being tied to the goals could be a reference to the goalie being tied to the goals in training to teach him to not be scared of being hit. The game ends with a shootout, similar to the final game in The Mighty Ducks film.
- Regarding the Kwik-E-Mart Gougers, to 'gouge' is not only a vicious act of violence but also the act of 'price gouging' when prices are spiked to a level that is considered unfair or exploitative.
- The school auditorium was named the "Butthead Memorial Auditorium", a reference to the series Beavis and Butt-head.
- The auditorium being named that, as well as Skinner's proverbially kicking himself afterwards upon making the announcement, was overall a reference to an incident in Greenwood, South Carolina, where various children voted to have their school named "Springfield Elementary School" after the eponymous location from The Simpsons as well as the resulting controversy. Ironically, in a press release by Fox News, Bart was stated to have said in response to the school's naming "At least it wasn't named Beavis and Butthead Elementary".
- The Apple Newton was an early PDA device with a reputation for poor handwriting recognition.
- Monster Island is a reference to the Godzilla movie series. The monsters Mothra, Rodan, and Gamera are seen chasing Lisa.
- Bart mentions the reality TV show COPS to Homer, which ran from 1989 up until 2020, when it was cancelled due to protests against the police after George Floyd's death, though FOX Nation now airs new episodes of the show.
- The episode features references to films such as Rollerball and The Pope of Greenwich Village.

Apu with black hair
Goofs[]
Milhouse with a green neck
- When Milhouse puts his head down after being tied to the goal with rope, his neck turns green like his shirt for a few frames.
- After the game, Homer gives Bart his turtle. After they hug, the turtle disappears.
- When Bart hits Lisa with trash, the trash is shown. When Apu sees Bart hitting trash at Lisa, it is missing, so the trash appears to come from nowhere and Bart is shown hitting the ground.
- When Marge, Homer, and Maggie are shown rooting, the order from left to right is Marge, Homer, and Maggie. When Lisa and Bart make up, Marge is shown where Homer was.
Dolph with the wrong hair color
- Right after Marge brings beer to Homer, Dolph can be seen with dark blond hair instead of his usual brown hair. This is fixed as soon as the camera angle changes.
- At the climax of the episode, the game clock counts down during Bart's penalty shot until it runs out and the game ends in a tie. In ice hockey, the clock remains stopped during penalty shots.
- As the crowd fights in the background, multiple crowd members' arms change color between yellow and either darker yellow or brown.
