The Simpsons has spawned a wide range of media based on the TV show, including a film, comics and video games.

TV Show

Main article: The Simpsons

The first appearance of The Simpsons on Television was on the Tracey Ulmann Show. In 1989, the show was picked up for a full series. Since then, the show has broadcast over 450 episodes and is currently in its Twenty-second series. Season 23 has already been confirmed.


Movie

The Simpsons Movie was released on July 27, 2007. It was produced by Fox, Gracie Films and Film Roman. The film was directed by long-time producer David Silverman and written by a team of writers including Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, George Meyer, Mike Reiss, John Swartzwelder, Jon Vitti, David Mirkin, Mike Scully, Matt Selman and Ian Maxtone-Graham.

There had been talk of a feature-length Simpsons film since the early season. James L. Brooks originally thought that the story of the episode "Kamp Krusty" was suitable for a film, but he encountered difficulties in trying to expand the script to feature-length.

Books

There have been many official Simpsons publications since the start of the series, as well as many unofficial. These range from In-universe books such as The Simpsons Uncensored Family Album to episode guides.

There have also been "Are We There Yet Guides" and The Simpsons Library of Wisdom, which focus on indiviual characters.


Comic stories from both Simpsons Comics and Bart Simpson Comics are reprinted in book format. Every year, various calendars are also released.


Video Games

The first Simpsons video Game was The Simpsons Arcade Game, released by Konami in 1991. Between 1991 and November 2001, 19 games were released on various formats, such as the NES, Commodore, Master System, Mega Drive, Game Boy, PC, Playstation and Game Boy Color.

Radical Entertainment released The Simpsons Road Rage in 2001 and The Simpsons Skateboarding was released exclusivly for Playstation 2 in 2002.

One of the most popular Simpsons games was The Simpsons Hit & Run, which followed a Grant Theft Auto style approach to the game. In 2007, The Simpsons Game was released.

Simpsons games have also been released on mobile and iOS platforms.

DVDs

Comics

The Simpsons Comics were originally published by Bongo in the US in November 1993. Since then they have been released in the UK (about a year behind the US counterparts), Australia, Serbia and other countries.

The comics originated as The Simpsons Illustrated in 1991 and lasted until 1993.

Bart Simpson Comics have also been released world-wide, including shorter stories based on Bart and friends. Treehouse of Horro Comics are released annually, though in some countries they are placed in the same run as standard Simpsons Comics.

Also the US and the UK have a series called The Simpsons Classics or The Best of the Simpsons, which re-print previous issues of the comic.

In one edition of the Simpsons comic and four of the Futurama comic, the two shows have crossed-over.


Discography

Collections of music featured in the show have been released on the albums Songs in the Key of Springfield, Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons and The Simpsons: Testify.

The 1990 album The Simpsons Sing the Blues contained all original material and peaked at number 3 in the American charts. A single written by Michael Jackson, called Do the Bartman, was released and was a British number one. A similar album, The Yellow Album contained both covers, original songs and music from the show.

Another single was released in 1997, called The Streets of Springfield. It failed to chart.

The Movies soundtrack, was also released in 2007, as The Simpsons Movie: The Music, with the song Spider-Pig entering the top 3 in Ireland, top 10 in New Zealand and Top 30 in Norway and the UK.
