Martin Hayter Short, OC (born March 26, 1950) is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, singer and writer, known for his comedic roles on SCTV, Saturday Night Live (Short is one of three SCTV cast members to also be hired for Saturday Night Live, joining Robin Duke and Tony Rosato), The Three Amigos, Jungle 2 Jungle, Mars Attacks!, Father of The Bride, Innerspace, Only Murders in the Building, and Pure Luck.
On SCTV and Saturday Night Live, Short was known for his comedic original characters, such as Ed Grimley (an oddball, nerdy man-child who had two interpretations: on SCTV, he was a miscast actor on SCTV's programming; on Saturday Night Live, he was a somewhat ordinary man who loved Wheel of Fortune, played the triangle, and encountered stranger people than he is. As of 2024, Martin Short's Ed Grimley is the only SCTV and SNL character to have his own Saturday morning cartoon show), Jackie Rogers, Jr. (an albino Vegas entertainer whose father, Jackie Rogers, Sr. [also played by Short] had his kids taken from him by social services due to breaking labor laws involving child actors, got a job as a punching bag for professional boxers when his career was in a slump, and was mauled to death by a mountain lion during a comeback special set in the woods), aged songwriter, Irving Cohen; and overly defensive defense attorney, Nathan Thrum. Short's celebrity impressions include Katherine Hepburn, Jerry Lewis (who, coincidentally, cameoed on The Simpsons as Professor Frink's father), Larry David (who, coincidentally, was a writer on the same season of Saturday Night Live that had Martin Short as a cast member: season 10 [1984-85]), Mick Jagger (who also cameoed on The Simpsons; only Jagger appeared as himself), Paul Simon, and Robin Williams. A full list can be found here.
On The Simpsons, he guest voiced as Guthrie Frenel in Springfield Splendor.
