Trivia

  • When Homer parks across 3 handicapped spaces it is the second time Marge has seen him do this the first is in "The Springfield Connection" when she is a cop (she arrests him in that scene for taking her hat).
  • When Chief Wiggum is taking Maggie's dolls at the end, he is heard humming "Hark The Herald Angel Sing."
    • In the same scene, look closely at one of the dolls he is taking. The rabbit is Bongo from Matt Groening's Life in Hell comic series.
    • Milhouse gets a Tickle Me Krusty doll for Christmas, a spoof of TMX Elmo. Later a real TMX Elmo will appear in Moe Baby Blues.
    • When the family is singing Here Comes Santa Claus Homer can be heard singing "Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh."
  • Lisa strangles Bart for the first time.
  • Lisa is seen in school in this episode, so either they go back to school right after the 26th, or 27th, or this episode takes place from Christmas Eve to early January when students go back to school after Christmas break.
  • This is the only known episode to be rated TV-G rather than the usual TV-PG or TV-14 on release. The next episode, All Singing, All Dancing was also given a TV-G rating upon original release.
    • However, Amazon.com rates the episode as TV-PG.
  • Bart was wearing boots when he buried the tree.
  • Barney is seen driving the Plow King from "Mr. Plow".
  • It is unknown how the Simpsons got all of their possessions back after this episode. There's two theories behind this, one: The Springfielders eventually apologized and give them their stuff back, and two, Bart might have a false awakaning after dreaming about water.
  • This is the last episode to air in 1997.
  • This episode has become negatively received due to the Simpsons family being outcasts, following Bart's confession.

Cultural references

  • Rudolph the red nose reindeer is referenced in the Chalkboard Gag
  • Miracle on 34th Street ā€“ The episode title is a play on the Christmas film.
    Game

    Jeopardy is in this episode

  • "Jeopardy!" ā€“ Alex Trebek's comment that Marge owed the show $5,200 (based on her negative $5,200 score, which cannot happen in real life on the show) is a spoof of criticism concerning Trebek's sometimes stern rules enforcement of shows he hosted, particularly during the early years of "Jeopardy!" Also a likely reference to Alex Trebek's early years hosting was that he is portrayed on The Simpsons with a mustache. At the time of the episode's airing and since then, Alex Trebek shaved off his mustache for a clean-shaven look.
  • It's a Wonderful Life - the scene where everyone rallies around to support the Simpsons is reminiscent of the last scene of the classic holiday movie. The scene where George Bailey tells his child to stop playing the piano is also spoofed by Homer telling Lisa to stop playing the piano.

Goofs

  • Louarm

    Lou without his right arm

When the tree burns down, the sides of the two leftmost presents change color a few times.
  • Greengone

    Apu's jacket missing some green

When Bart gives false information to the family that they were robbed by a burglar and they come to comfort him, Lisa's left arm appears on Bart's shoulder before Lisa actually comes.
  • When Lou shrugs his shoulders, his right arm goes missing for a frame.
  • At 742 Evergreen Terrace, the green on the left part of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon's jacket disappears a few times.
  • In this episode, the Old Jewish Man has a different voice than usual.
  • Jasper would not have been able to dance if he claimed he could not feel anything below his chin.
