He is the maternal grandfather of Homer Simpson, the paternal great-grandfather of Bart Simpson, Lisa Simpson, and Maggie Simpson, and also the grandfather-in-law of Marge Simpson. in the episode "The Winter of His Content" Homer reveals that he is alive, yet Grampa never visits him or acknowledges his existence; defending his own behavior towards Grampa. Lisa is shocked about him being alive and nervously changes the subject. However this could more likely be a reference to Orville Simpson, Abe's father.
