The Mt. Swartzwelder Historic Cider Mill is an operating cider mill and tourist attraction located in the outskirts of Springfield.

A heritage site and family attraction, the mill promotes itself as "now 40% quainter" and offers visitors guided tours by Randy, explaining the production of cider making and sharing the mill's history. Visitors can also enjoy tastings and purchase the mill's own products.

History[]

Mt Swartzwelder Historic Cider Mill was built at an unknown time, possibly near the time Springfield was founded. After construction was completed, production continued until 1941, when its workers left to fight in World War II.

The cider mill workers returned to find the mill as they left it, with the addition of thousands upon thousands of rats. Randy informs guests on the mill tour that the rats can still be heard "gnawing away at the apples and splashing around in the toilets" if visitors listen very carefully.

Features[]

The cider mill produces and sells apple cider, apple juice, apple hats (similar to cheese hats), apple pies, and many other apple-related products in the gift shop. Season passes to the mill are also available from the ticket office.

At the cider mill, February and August are known as "tart months", when the mill can produce cider sour enough to give any American a permanent French accent.

Behind the Laughter[]

Mt. Swartzwelder was named after John Swartzwelder, one of the writers of The Simpsons.
