Nana Sophie Mussolini is the mother of Luann Van Houten and Milhouse's maternal grandmother. She is from Italy and hates the English language, because an American WWII soldier left her pregnant with Milhouse's uncle Bastardo.^[1] She used to whip Milhouse whenever he spoke English instead of Italian.^[2]

The grandmother in "Bart Sells His Soul" and the one in "The Last of the Red Hat Mamas" must be two different characters, since one of them lives in Tuscany, while the other is seen living in Springfield. Additionally, Nana Sophie doesn't seem to speak English, while Grandma Van Houten does.
In the Italian dub, she whips Milhouse because he speaks in Italian rather than in Tuscan dialect.
Sophie shares her surname with Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
