The New Bedlam Rest Home for the Emotionally Interesting, also known as New Bedlam Insane Asylum and New Bedlam Mental Hospital, is a mental institution in Springfield.

When Homer was declared insane for wearing a pink shirt to work, he was sent to the New Bedlam.[1] A straightjacket from the institution was seen lying on the ground downtown.[2] Duffman once referenced Homer's being in a "loony bin."[3] While the power plant workers are cleaning trash from a highway, you can see a New Bedlam straightjacket littered among other assorted pieces of trash.

New Bedlam is not the only insane asylum in Springfield - somebody may also be admitted to, or admit themselves to Calmwood Mental Hospital as Ned Flanders did in Hurricane Neddy.

In the "Treehouse of Horror IV" segment "Terror at 5½ Feet", Bart was deemed insane for his disruptive behavior about a gremlin trying to disable the school bus. Even though his claims were true, he was still sent to the asylum on a trolley for 'disruptive behaviour'.[4]

The New Bedlam Rest Home for the Emotionally Interesting recently appeared in The Simpsons: Tapped Out during the Homerpalooza 2017 Event as a premium building that costs 150 donuts.[5]

Behind the Laughter[]

The building and several of the patients are based on the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which was shot on-location at the Oregon State Hospital.

The name comes from Bedham, England's first asylum for the treatment of mental illness. In 1247 the Priory of Saint Mary of Bethlehem was founded in London, devoted to healing sick paupers and becoming known as Bethlehem Hospital. Londoners later abbreviated this to 'Bethlem' and often pronounced it 'Bedlam'.
