Season 27 was hinted by Al Jean via Twitter, where he stated that the show would definitely not finish in May 2015 . The season premiered on September 27, 2015 with "Every Man's Dream" and ended on May 22, 2016 with "Orange is the New Yellow"".

The Metacritic website reported on August 6, 2014, that the series was "already renewed through 2015-16 season".

In production, this season is the last to be produced by Film Roman. In the next season, Fox Television Animation took over producing the show.
