Skis couch gag |
|
The Skis couch gag is the first couch gag of Season 14.
Plot[]
Homer is on water skis, with the others on him, as he ski-jumps over sharks; everybody lands on the couch, but Homer is without his legs, which are in the sharks' mouths Homer doesn't notice.
Cultural References[]
- The couch gag is a reference to the "jump the shark" phenomenon, when a TV show reaches its creative peak and is now declining in quality or does something cliched or gimmicky to alienate audiences. The name comes from a famous scene from the sitcom Happy Days, where Fonzie jumps a shark on water skis and most fans and viewers consider that the point where Happy Days had become too gimmicky. There was a website in the early-to-mid-2000s that chronicled different points when TV shows (and television channels, such as MTV) jumped the shark (and, in some cases, either jumped the shark on day one [meaning that the show was never good in the first place] or never jumped the shark [meaning that the show either always was good, or it was canceled/ended before it could reach its shark-jumping moment]).
