- The hi-tech glasses gifted by Mr. Burns are a promo for Google Glass.
- The title is a parody of the HBO television series and the blue romantic comedy films, Sex and the City. Homer was referring to that franchise in Trilogy of Error. The segment from Treehouse of Horror XII is called Hex and the City.
- When Marge looks at Maggie, it says "Attempted Murderess", referencing Who Shot Mr. Burns?.
- When Homer and Lenny are enjoying their new glasses, they look up and see the show's title screen, breaking the fourth wall.
- The last time an office supply theft occurred at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant was in How I Wet Your Mother.
- Smithers mentions that the doctor said to take Mr. Burns in if he displays kindness or warmth, referencing the episode The Fool Monty where it shows that kindness will kill Burns, while evil will make him live longer.
- The couch gag is a realtered version of a British TV channel, Channel 4, introduction to the Simpsons. The original version had Homer lie on his hammock with the Duff at his head, which bounced onto the cables when he lays down. Furthermore, after panning out to show Springfield, the different lit-up areas formed the Channel 4 logo, a 4. The sequence of Homer climbing the tree is completely re-used. The Channel 4 logo outline can also be seen in the city streets.
- The title of the video Marge and Lisa watch "Valentine's Day: Always A Massacre" is a reference to the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre.
- The Valentine's Day card that Bart was going to give Nelson is a parody of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.
- Homer mentions the Marmaduke comic strip.
- The scene where Mr. Burns calls Homer "Mr. Burns" (thinking Homer was refering to himself even though he was really refering to the boss) is similiar to how Patrick Star from the show SpongeBobSquarePants called Mr. Krabs "Patrick" in the episode Party Pooper Pants after mr. Krabs explained to Patrick what his topic card says and Patrick thought Mr. Krabs was refering to himself by the name "Patrick".
