Springfield International Airport is the primary airport serving Springfield.
A recurring gag is how despite Springfield's relatively small size, the airport has frequent direct flights to so many major international destinations such as Air France's Paris to Springfield being "Flight 19" Tirana to Springfield is "Flight 2"[1] (lower numbered flights are usually an airline's most popular or "flagship" routes) or Lisa asking, "Which Bombay to Springfield [Air India] flight is [Manjula] on? The 10:00, the 10:15, or the 10:30?"[2]
Similar to other Springfield locations, the sign for the airport often has changing jokes such as "No Crashes Since Tuesday"[3] or "Now Air Marshal Free"[4] or "Built For the Olympics We Never Got"[5]
Springfield may have at least 2 different commercial airlines based out of the airport, Air Springfield and Springfield Airways (or the show mixes up the names from episode to episode).
Description[]
The airport is curfew free. There is also a private bar for pilots only called The Little Black Box. It is the primary hub for Air Springfield and Crazy Clown Airlines. The airport is undergoing renovations to accommodate the world's largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380. It also has a OneWorld lounge at gate 45. The Boeing 787 visits the airport twice a day, operated by ANA. In the episode "Homerland", it is revealed that Springfield International Airport has 50 gates.

Incidents[]
- An airliner from New York almost hit another airliner that was taxiing, the pilot did not care and commented on the near miss with "Hey, I'm landing here!"[20]
- Homer Simpson went to The Little Black Box, the last bar in Springfield after being kicked out of Moe's Tavern. Then, he was sent to take charge of a flight to Chicago-O'Hare (although he didn't know how to fly a plane). When he got into the Air Springfield Airbus A340, he accidentally raised the landing gear while parked on the apron. No one sustained any serious injuries.[21]
- A private jet owned by Elton John made an emergency landing after a chandelier inside had electrical problems.
- An Air Springfield Airbus A340 over-ran the runway and plunged into the river. The crew and passengers survived as well.[21]
- An airliner crashed into and destroyed the wall of the TV room in the Simpsons House, the pilot apologized and reversed the plane out of the house.[22]
- An airliner crashed on the roof of the airport before falling to the ground. The building appeared unharmed, though the fate of the plane and its passengers is unknown.[3]
- After Springfield's football team lost a championship, an angry mob was so frustrated with the team that the mob managed to flip the team's plane over with the team inside. This somehow caused the vehicle's wing to explode.[3]
- While the Simpsons were going to a wedding, there was a delay, due to airport incompetence, so the aircraft had turned off the engines, the crew stopped the passengers from leaving the plane and allowed the ethnic passengers to eat their weird, fowl smelling and unusual home cooked food. (One man eat a goat's head and drunk blood from the goat's eye.) This left them trapped in the heat for seven hours straight. When the crew revealed that there was still no word for takeoff clearance, Homer was forbidden from using the lavatory, He angrily started to make a mockery about how airlines don't treat people like people anymore, the air marshall attempted to stop him but Homer got onto the wing. This made the aircraft turn to the left side and made everyone in the plane clap and cheer after he was stopped by security. But little did they know, Bart had recorded everything on his digital camera. This would make Homer famous.
- The Plywood Pelican was heading for Springfield International Airport but the wing snapped off during flight, the plane crashed into Springfield Town Square, no one was injured but Chief Wiggum was woken from his nap, he attempted to fine the pilot but didn't because of the his services to the down (smuggling drugs from Canada).[23]
- Springfield mayor Joe Quimby attempted to hijack a Boeing 747.[24]
- The Simpsons chose to go on a mega-saver vacation. They boarded at the very last minute an Air Japan Boeing 747-200B, stealing the vacation from the Flanderses. During climbing, Bart Simpson was playing his Gameboy when a female flight attendant told him it wasn't safe to play it yet. Bart replies "You're the waitress" and presses the "Shutdown" button, which causes the 747-200B to nosedive. Then the flight attendant pleaded him to turn it back on, bringing it back to its normal position.[25]
- Just before a Delta Airlines Boeing 757 finishes the Minneapolis-Springfield-Atlanta route, Bart (seated in 33C) takes off the seatbelt in defiance of the captain's instructions, forcing it to turn back to its starting point. In the aftermath, Bart is placed onto the no fly list.[16]
- When the Simpsons were flying to Italy, Homer tried to find a TV screen in his armrest, just like there are in first class. He found cables and he pulls them, causing the leftmost engine of the right wing of a Boeing 747SP to fall from the plane and land in Cletus Spucklers' farm.[26]
- Although not happening in Springfield, the 747 the Simpson family were using to fly home from Tokyo was yanked out of the sky by Godzilla, however the captain manages to free the plane, saving the passengers on board.
