The Springfield Tar Pits were a natural landmark of Springfield. Located a few blocks from the Springfield Natural History Museum, they consisted of serveral cubic tons of malodorous, gas-emitting black stuff. The tar pits could be visited, and the price of admission included a free bucket of tar (with a limit of one bucket per capita, although professional roofers and candy machine saboteurs were excluded from the offer). The Tar Pits were also named one of the top "Ant-Free Picninc Sites" by Springfield Magazine.[1] Eventually, Mayor Joe Quimby had the tar pits drained to make room for a new highway.[3]
