Cultural references[]

Couch Gag[]

Episode[]

  • The title of the episode is a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Homer mentions Billy Zane when he shaved his beard.
  • Marge says to Lisa "A week ago, you'd never even worn makeup.", a reference to the previous episode, "The Girl Code", aired a week before this one, where Lisa did wear makeup.
  • According to Seymour, Berrera's cat is named Bowie, an homage to David Bowie (who died the same day this episode aired).
  • Milhouse mentions the movie American Sniper when asking Berrera if she already killed someone with a sniper rifle.
  • Groundskeeper Willie is reading a Robert Burns' text in the poetry class. Like Willie, Burns was from Scotland and helped define the Scots dialect.
    • As this episode was the first to debut in 2016, it is almost a coincidence that Burns was chosen for Willie to recite from; Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne", which is often sung on New Year's Eve.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third couch gag in Season 27 where The Simpsons are shown with another type of animation due to guest star animators. The other two are "Treehouse of Horror XXVI" and "Barthood".
  • Milhouse reveals that he had a crush on Edna Krabappel.
  • The name of this episode was originally "Teenage Mutant Milk-fed Hurdles".

Continuity[]

  • Bart writes on wall "Skinner is a wiener" ("Bart the Genius"), he says that is the first time after 30 years. However, "Bart the Genius" was aired in 1990,
  • Homer shaved his beard, giving him a very smooth face. Seconds later, he went to show Marge his new face, only for his beard to be back on his face again almost immediately afterwards. This is continuity on a gag used in the episode ("Some Enchanted Evening"), where when Homer was getting ready for his date with Marge, he shaved his beard and it immediately grew right back on his face again. This pretty much makes this beard thing an official trait about Homer Simpson. This might also be a trait among Simpson men as in a previous episode Bart had his head shaved and it grew back within a week.

Goofs[]

  • Lisa already wore makeup in older episodes, such as "Lard of the Dance", "The President Wore Pearls", "Smart and Smarter" and many others.
  • Homer already taught Bart how to shave his beard in the Season 2 episode "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish".
  • In the middle of the episode the trio (Carol, Bart and Skinner) are in the playground and Skinner calls her Herrera, not Berrera. This is not only in the audio track but the captions on hulu also spell it with an "H" this one and only time on the episode (each and every other incident spells it with a "B").
