- The episode title is a parody on the phrase "The Heart Wants What it Wants."
- Maggie can be seen playing with a plush toy of Bongo, the one-eared rabbit from Matt Groening's Life in Hell comic strip.
- When Marge makes a cooking suggestion to Wolfgang Puck, he immediately heads to the "Puck-mobile" to the music of the 1960s Batman television series.
- Lisa's determination not to be a "Gamecock" indicates her unwillingness to attend the University of South Carolina, whose mascot is the Gamecocks.
- When Bart was driving in bumping car, like Mr. Walker/Wheeler (aka Goofy), whereupon he is the victim of other motorists' unsafe (and sometimes even predatory) driving habits in "Motor Mania".
- When Bart is spying on Milhouse and Greta, the song playing is "Use ta Be My Girl" by the O'Jays.
- Rainier Wolfcastle saying "Remember when I said I would eat you last? I lied!" to the piece of pie on the dinner table, is a parody of the movie Commando when Arnold Schwarzenegger says "Remember when I said I would kill you last? I lied!"
- Milhouse says "Wazzup" in a similar manner to the Budweiser commercial in an attempt to impress Greta.
- The music playing when the family arrives in Toronto is "Take Off" by Bob and Doug McKenzie, featuring Rush and their lead singer, Geddy Lee.
- One of the studios Bart passes by is filming Canadian Graffiti, a parody of the 1973 George Lucas movie American Graffiti. Graffiti consists of "Obey the Rules!"
- Milhouse's line "Take off hoser!" is a reference to Bob and Doug McKenzie.
- The "Paramountie Studios" logo is a parody of Paramount Pictures.
- Principal Skinner's last standup scene is an obvious reference to Seinfeld.
- The scene where Bart broke up with Greta, refers to the movie Legally Blonde.
- During the episode, Bart says "it's time to Rama lam these ding dongs"' referencing the Song from Animal House "Shama Lama Ding Dong".
- This is the last episode to use the Circus Line couch gag.
Trivia[]
- At the Springfield Private School fair, the bumper cars are modeled after high end cars. The cars include a Porsche 911, a Jaguar XK8, a BMW Z3, a Mercedes 280 (which Bart drives), a Lexus LS400/IS300 (which Bart runs into), a Rolls-Royce limousine, as well as an ambulance. As Bart proved, the bumper cars even have an airbag!
- Dr. Hibbert’s kids were seen at the private school.
Goofs[]
- During the bumper car scene, when Bart targets the kid in the Lexus bumper car, it resembles an LS400; however, as Bart charges towards it, its appearance now resembles the IS300.
- Also during the bumper car scene, when the ambulance tends to the kid in the Lexus bumper car that Bart hit, another Lexus bumper car is seen in the shot.
- Homer says it doesn't matter if he gets hurt as Canada has free health care, however only citizens and permanent residents can get free health care. To be fair Homer is usually shown to be clueless and not well-educated, so he probably doesn't understand this.
- Principal Skinner says the Periodic Table of Elements in his school has 16 elements, "all lanthanides". The lanthanide series only has 15 elements.
