• The name of this episode is a reference to the novel The Paper Chase.
• An Indian Point Nuclear player says he is "eating Mister Softee" when Burns runs over an ice cream cart and almost running over him. Mister Softee is an ice cream truck franchise based in Runnemede, New Jersey with many vendors in New York City.
• As evidenced by the tweet explaining the premise behind the episode, Burns University is a parody of Trump University.
• The childlike Yale students with extremely liberal views are known as social justice warriors.
• Homer seeing Lisa in his mind telling him that he is crushing her while he is teaching his class as professor is a reference to how Jimmy Neutron sees visions in his mind in the Nickelodeon cartoon, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
• Homer traveling to the resort and teaching robots is a reference to the 2015 film Ex Machina.
• Bourbon shows off his army of Sully Sullenberger robots at his estate. Sullenberger is the protagonist of the 2016 film Sully, released 7 months before this episode aired.

Trivia

• This is one of the few episodes where Lisa drinks alcohol (in this case, red wine) and becomes violently drunk. This is also the second episode where Lisa drinks red wine, the first was "The Italian Bob".
• In one scene, Homer reminds his students not to let nuclear rods fall into their shirts, the Power Plant scene from the opening sequence is shown.
• Homer intimates his old voice from early seasons when he says "Lets all go out for frosty chocolate milkshakes".
