Cultural references

  • The episode title is a pun on the 1969 Disney movie The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, which was remade into a TV movie in 1995, starring Kirk Cameron.
  • The episode is both a parody of, and an homage to, the 1960s TV series The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan voices Number 6 in the episode, reprising his character from The Prisoner. (In the episode, "The Village" has been replaced by "The Island".)
  • When Comic Book Guy reads the rumor on Mr. X's Homepage regarding the supplies for road maintenance being diverted by Mayor Quimby to developing a swimming pool in his office, Comic Book Guy shouts "There is no emoticon that can express the rage that I'm feeling!", mirroring a line made by Treebeard upon the discovery of Saruman's destruction and burning of its forests for Sauron in the second installment of The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy: The Two Towers.

Trivia

  • After Homer stole Number 6's boat, Number 6 says "That's the third time that happened." He said earlier that it took 33 years to build the boat, which means that Number 6 has been on The Island for at least 99 years. But it is more likely that it took 11 years to build the boat and 33 years altogether.
  • Mr. X's website is an actual website, which you can visit at www.mrxswebpage.com [1].
  • List of websites Homer visits:
  • The computer salesman says one of his computers is the kind astronauts use to do their taxes and Homer says, "I was an astronaut!" The salesman doesn't believe him, but Homer was actually an astronaut during the episode "Deep Space Homer."
  • In Matt Groening's other show Futurama Bender calls himself Mr.X so he won't be killed by the mafia.
  • In this episode Homer ran a website. In Das Bus, he ran an internet company.
  • The last time a Simpson spreads gossip on Springfield's denizens occurred in "Wild Barts Can't Be Broken".

Goofs

  • Near the new pool, there is a guy with the words "City Worker" on the back of his blue shirt putting finishing touches on a statue. He is using cement from a bag labeled POTHOLE CEMENT. Later, when we see people repairing the pothole, they are wearing orange jump suits, and the stuff they are filling the hole with is most definitely tar.
  • When Homer enters his URL to show the family his page, all the keys he types are function keys, control keys, and numeric keypad keys—but no letters.
  • When Homer has the computer in the kitchen it has a can holder and other features. But when he is using it on the sofa it has none of those features on it.
  • Homer heard Krusty say he ran over a guy in parking lot and dumped the body on a golf course but he never posted it on his webpage.
  • Comic Book Guy should've known it was Homer the secord he logged on to his Mr. X site because Homer's face is shown briefly.
  • Doesn't Lisa have Internet on her computer, maybe she could've told Homer about what was happening at the Plant?
  • Potholes are actually treated with a 'Cold' or 'Hot' mix, depending on the season, which it's a asphalt-based mixture, not cement.
  • Hit Counters aren't updated in real-time.
  • Even a terrorist would take pre-caution when handling *Radioactive* uranium.
  • If Burns and Smithers didn't want anyone to know what they were up, why they use the executive washroom since workers, like Homer, aren't allow there?
  • The woman presenting the Pulitzer never mentioned the category in which Homer won the prize.
