The Day the Earth Stood Cool |
|
Cultural References[]
- The name of the episode is an obvious reference to the 1952 and 2008 films "The Day The Earth Stood Still".
- The episode name is also a reference to either The Day the Earth Looked Stupid, a segment from Treehouse of Horror XVII or the Futurama episode The Day the Earth Stood Stupid.
- Lisa's last sentence "No matter where you go I will find you" is a reference to the movie "The Last of the Mohicans".
- In T-Rex's room, he has a banner of English football club West Ham United. Although for some reason, the colours of the badge are green and gold instead of red and blue.
- Disco Stu wears a Daft Punk helmet and he says "Disco Stu has found a new thing" in a robotic voice. The helmet is Thomas Bangalter's Helmet.
- The people that came to the Springfield were called "cool", but they seemed to dress and act like "hipsters".
- The satirical newspaper that Marge picks up is "The Onion."
- One of the posters Bart and Lisa put up is "Rockshow," a possible reference to "The Rock Show" by Blink-182.
- T-Rex mentions having a Tumblr page dedicated to posers.
- As Bart and T-Rex begin fighting, the band plays the fight music from Star Trek.
- The Decemberists appear as Springfield Charter Co-Op Experiment's new music teachers. Singer Colin Meloy asking who wants to "learn a song about press gangs and infanticide" refers to their 2009 song "The Rake".
- The two gueststars of the episode, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, have worked together before on Portlandia, an absurdist sketch series set in Portland. This could have contributed to why Terrence and Emily were from Portland, along with the fact that the city is known for being more laid-back and eccentric.
Trivia[]
- There is no opening sequence in this episode. Marking this as the 9th episode to have no Couch Gag, Billboard Gag, or Chalkboard Gag.
- The migration of Portlandia citizens in Springfield led to several places in the town being remodeled:
- Sprawl-Mart became a clothing store called America's Apparel.
- Springfield Tire Fire was changed into a farmers market.
- King Toot's Music Store became a drug clinic called King Toke's Medicinal Marijuana Clinic.
- The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop became a literal book store called Taschen.
- Springfield Elementary School was renamed Springfield Charter Co-Op Experiment.
- Every house in Evergreen Terrace (except the Flanders' and the Simpsons') were remodeled.
- This is the second episode where people from a different area move to Springfield which effects the entire area. The first was Coming to Homerica.
- Before this episode came out in The Simpsons: Tapped Out players could build the Cool Brown House for their Springfield for a limited time.
- Terrence and Emily hire a tattoo artist for T-Rex's birthday party even though it is illegal for children to get tattoos.
- The toe sneakers that Terrence and Emily wear on their feet during their conversation with Ned Flanders are a reference to Vibram Fivefingers minimalist shoes, which are actual real life shoes that started a "barefoot shoe" trend.
Goofs/Errors[]
- After sharing a hug together with Terrence, Homer claims "I did it. I did it! I man-hugged!". "I/I've did/done it, I [type action]" is usually something you would say if you never done that certain thing you mentioned saying this before, and you are gratefully taking notice that you have finally done such an action. However, Homer did hug people who were grown man before this episode throughout the series, like his next door neighbor Ned in When Flanders Failed & Homer Loves Flanders, which are select episodes from the 1991-92 & 1993-94 seasons, respectively, not to mention Karl in Simpson and Delilah (the 2nd season), his own brother in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? (the same season), Apu along with his (Homer's) family members in Homer and Apu (the 5th season), & indie filmaker Jim Jarmusch in his guest appearance in the episode Any Given Sundance (from late in the 19th season), just to name a few. He will hug more man after this episode aired, like his neighbor Ned again in Bull-E, Season 26 & A Serious Flanders, Season 33.
