The Outlands is the name of an unincorporated region beyond Springfield. It was populated by a colorful variety of society rejects and lowlifes who cherished the anarchy and freedom from government supervision. Julian Assange, the fugitive founder of WikiLeaks, kept a secret headquarters there.
The Simpsons settled in the Outlands after being kicked out of Springfield. Eventually, much to Marge's dismay, nearly all of the residents of Springfield, tempted by the promise of a better community, moved to the Outlands and rebuilt it into a replica of what they left behind.
