- The title is a pun to the open cluster in the constellation Scorpius, named "The Scorpion's Tail".
- The coyote chasing the road runner is an obvious reference to the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons.
- The Hotenhoffer Pharmaceuticals company logo "HP" is a parody of the Hewlett-Packard logo.
- The Hotenhoffer Pharmaceuticals' "Suitcase Suzies" were graduates of Arizona State University.
- A crane in the Hotenhoffer Pharmaceuticals mistakenly airlifts the Lambda Lambda Lambda fraternity from the teen sex comedy Revenge of the Nerds and drops it into the research area.
- Homer thinks Walter Hotenhoffer is Willy Wonka, the factory owner from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but Bart thinks Walter is actually Augustus Gloop, the obese and greedy German boy from that same film.
- A couple of times, Walter makes allusion to the chocolate river scene from the 1971 film adaptation where Augustus Gloop tries to drink from the river, falls, and is sucked by a tube in which he gets stuck.
- Seymour Skinner uses Tums for his acid reflux.
- When Milhouse finds the skeleton of a hippie, he starts repeating "Never get off the bus". This is a parody of the "Never get outa the boat" scene from the 1979 war film Apocalypse Now.

- We learn Seymour Skinner was once bitten by a rattlesnake on where Superintendent Chalmers often plays a prank to remind him.
- The last time a Simpsons eye sticks out was in "Lard of the Dance". In this episode, Bart is impressed about the family having its own 'monster' when both of Abe's eyes protrude right out of their sockets although it grossed him out in Lard of the Dance when Homer's eye bulge out while it was still in its socket.
- The main flower is this episode is called Silvertongue. In "Lisa the Iconoclast", it is revealed that Jebediah Springfield had a silver tongue.
