The Simpsons 2 (also known as The Simpsons Movie 2) is the upcoming sequel to 2007's The Simpsons Movie, and would be the second feature film adaptation of The Simpsons and is planned to be released in July 23, 2027.[1]
Description
For over a decade, it has been stated there might be a sequel, but not while the series is still in production. The purchase of a large part of Fox's entertainment chain by Disney revealed that the staff is planning a sequel.
The chalkboard gag for the first post-movie episode, "He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs" was "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie", bringing speculation that the movie may be released in 2027 due to the contradictive nature of chalkboard gags. The joke eventually came full circle when the movie was announced to release in 2027.
In 2014, James L. Brooks stated that he had been approached by Fox, who requested a second film. He added that there were no immediate plans, stating, "We've been asked to [develop it], but we haven't. We're doing a lot of other stuff."
In December 2014, prior to the broadcast of the episode "The Man Who Came to Be Dinner," Al Jean wrote on Twitter that the episode (which had been produced in 2012 and was originally set to air in 2013) had been held back because it was being considered for adaptation into a sequel film, due to its "cinematic" nature. Jean later expanded that there was the fear of the potential film being considered "not canonical" with the TV series, and the potential backlash of resolving such conflicts with the "memory wipe" trope.
In July 2017, Silverman and Jean said that the sequel was in the early stages of development, stressing the toll that the first film's production had on the entire staff. On August 10, 2018, it was reported that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie was in development. However, the project seems to have been shelved as it was not mentioned again.
On July 22, 2019, Groening stated that he has "no doubts" that Disney will likely produce a sequel one day. Additionally, on August 24, 2019, Al Jean said that they have talked about a sequel with Disney. It is also possible that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had temporarily affected plans.
On September 29, 2025, 20th Century Studios revealed on X a teaser poster for the film, with a slated release date of July 23, 2027, likely between the releases of Season 38 and Season 39.[2]
