Stories[]
Yes, Flanders, There is a Santa Claus[]
It is almost Christmas, and Rev. Lovejoy shops at the Kwik-E-Mart, but disapproves of the kitschy Christmas decorations and products. However, he accepts defeat when Apu points out that Lovejoy makes sloppy joes out of an animal sacred to his people. Lovejoy then gets inspiration for a sermon.
At church, Lovejoy preaches that Christmas has become too "commercialised" and that his churchgoers have forgotten its meaning. Ned Flanders disagrees, but thinks Lovejoy has a point when he asks the kids what they think Christmas is about and Bart is greedy, Lisa focuses on history, and Ralph thinks it's Santa's birthday.
Lovejoy then tells everyone Santa does not exist, so Marge buys everyone ice cream to cheer the kids up (even though Bart and Lisa knew already). Then, the Simpsons notice Rod and Todd throwing out their Christmas decorations, and the Flanders boys sadly reveal that Ned told them to because of Lovejoy's sermon. Bart then gets the idea of cheering the Flanders boys up by being Santa for them.
On Christmas Eve, the boys are still sad and making a frowning snowman, so Bart and Lisa try to convince them that Santa does exist. The Flanders brothers reveal that they didn't write to Santa, but Lisa assures them that putting out milk and cookies will work.
That night, Lisa wakes up the boys and tells them Santa is around, distracting them with Santa's Little Helper dressed up as a reindeer. While the boys go to put out the milk and cookies, Bart dresses up in Homer's old (unwashed) Santa suit. Then, Wiggum appears and warns Bart and Lisa that a prowler is about.
After the boys put out the milk and cookies, Bart enters to bite one of the cookies, but then Snake enters, also dressed as Santa. Bart and Lisa hide, then Ned enters and holds Snake at gunpoint. Rod and Todd enter, but they cry, thinking that Snake really is Santa and that their father therefore wants to shoot Santa.
Lisa then goes out of hiding and points out that while she also finds the Christmas ads annoying at times, the Flanders boys clearly know the meaning of Christmas despite the ads, and Santa isn't just a commercial but rather a symbol of giving. Ned is touched by what Lisa said, but he also tricks Snake into handing over his loot by saying that "Santa" should leave his bag of "gifts" behind and leave.
Snake obeys Ned, and the Flanders boys accept what's in the sack, which to Bart's dismay turns out to be gifts stolen from the Simpson house intended for him, Lisa, and Maggie. Ned thanks Lisa and admits he and Lovejoy went overboard. Then, Homer turns up, disgruntled because someone (presumably Snake) stole his Christmas beer.
Scared Straight...To Jail[]
Bart has been messing with Homer for a whole week: On Sunday, he hit him in the knee with a staple gun, on Monday, he seals Milhouse into the wall, on Tuesday, Bart brings snow into the house, on Wednesday, he replaces the toothpaste with glue, on Thursday, he dumps lobsters on a sleeping Homer, on Friday, Bart pies Homer with a limburger cheese quiche, and on Saturday, Bart ties Homer's leg to a rocket.
By the next Sunday, Homer is very fed up with Bart's antics, so Marge gives him a psychology magazine to read. It suggests ignoring the child's misbehaviour, stating that children misbehave for attention, but Homer thinks this is ridiculous. He turns the TV on, which shows Kent Brockman reporting that the police are pretending to arrest misbehaving youths in order to scare them out of lawbreaking.
When Bart crashes through the ceiling in the bath after an attempt at diving, Homer decides to have the police do the fake arrest trick to Bart. They do, and Wiggum introduces Bart to his "cellmate", a man named Shiv who hangs out near the Kwik-E-Mart's dumpsters.
Shiv introduces Bart to the other inmates, who are impressed by his pranks. He starts teaching them how to make mischief, resulting in chaos breaking out in the jailhouse. Bart, in fact, actually enjoys his stay at the prison, until the policemen get angry at him for starting the mess and chase after him.
The cops bring Bart home, angering Homer since his plan to scare Bart failed. He then digs through the trash, wanting to swat Bart with Marge's magazine.
Not A (Green, Slimy) Creature Was Stirring[]
When Rabbi Krustovsky points out that there are no Hanukkah mascots, Krusty decides to make one. He comes up with several designs, but his employees feel that they aren't childish enough, so Krusty decides to get ideas from children.
He brings around Bart, Lisa, Nelson, Milhouse, and Ralph to design mascots. Nelson suggests a moose, but Bart points out that a Christmas moose already exists, starting a fight. Then, the kids make various suggestions, and when Bart suggests a turtle, Lisa finds the idea gross as they shed their skin but Milhouse and Nelson find the idea cool. Bart suggests a poop-themed turtle mascot, but Lisa vetoes it, then Ralph points out that a turtle's flippers have three fingers but his "flippers" only have four.
This gives Lisa the idea of sticking with the turtle mascot and naming him Flipper. The idea wins, Krusty accepts it, and he sends Bart's drawing of Flipper to the costume designer. However, the costume comes out very ugly due to them interpreting the crude drawing literally. Krusty accidentally slips and opens the curtain, then all the kids in the audience are scared away by the mascot.
Blue-Haired Lawyer tells Krusty that his mascot is extremely unpopular and he needs a new one. Kang and Kodos watch the show on TV and mistake Flipper for one of their deities named Xarthon 9. They go to Krusty's stage and tell Mel, who they still think is Xarthon 9 due to the costume, that they would do anything for him. This inspires Krusty to make the aliens his new mascots, who he calls Moshie and Mendel.
Hibernatin' Homer[]
On Christmas, Homer is feeling cramped up and has a swollen belly due to too much food. He decides to go on a diet, but Marge points out that he says that every Christmas but it never works. Homer indeed has trouble stopping himself from eating, even in his cramped state. Lisa then points out that bears lose weight through hibernation, which makes Homer want to do just that.
The Simpsons go to Frink in a cave, who gives Homer a sedative. Bart then points out that Homer is the breadwinner, so he isn't sure how the other Simpsons would survive the winter, but Lisa is confident that they can improvise. Over the days, Bart, Lisa, and Marge take turns subbing for Homer at the power station. Marge does so well that she even wins an Employee of the Month award.
Back in Frink's cave, Fat Tony, Legs, and Louie hide some stolen Valentine's candy in the cave. They mistake Homer for their former associate and kidnap him, wanting him to work with them. Homer stays asleep as the mobsters dress him in a suit and make him lean on their goons to intimidate them into paying up. At Luigi's restaurant, Homer sleepwalks and eats in his sleep, then the police enter, starting a gunfight.
Homer leaves, still sleepwalking, where he is spotted by a woman, who then uses him as a St. Patrick's Day mascot for Duff, but still Homer stays asleep. When that is over, Mrs. Quimby uses him as an Easter Bunny mascot, and Homer eats the candy in his sleep. Ralph gets angry at Homer for eating his candy, calls him a "piggie", and kicks him down the hill. Homer's bunny suit rips off and he rolls back into the cave. However, when Frink wakes him up, he finds out that Homer has not only not lost any weight, he has in fact gained 56 pounds due to the food and beer he had in his sleep.
