The music used in the episode and over the end credits is remixed to sound like the theme from Hill Street Blues. Other references to the show include the briefing scene.
The Skinners' domestic disturbance appears on an episode of COPS.
The man wanting the "freaking guns!" at the training session is a reference to Police Academy. It’s also mentioned when Homer says that Marge being a cop is supposed to be fun and exciting like Spaceballs, not painful and disturbing like Police Academy (in the European Spanish version, Homer says he thought Marge being a cop would be fun and exciting like Robocop, but, instead, it's disappointing like Police Academy, which keeps in the jab about how the Police Academy movies aren't considered good, but gets rid of the bait-and-switch joke that Spaceballs is the fun and exciting movie while Police Academy is painful and disturbing).
Marge driving over an incomplete freeway section during training references Speed.
The Springfield Pops play the theme from Star Wars. Homer mistakenly believes its composer John Williams is dead.
When Marge runs the driving test to join the Springfield Police, Chief Wiggum references the Magic Eye series of books.
Previous Episode References[]
Homer's Triple Bypass: COPS gets parodied (COPS in Springfield, showing just how incompetent Chief Wiggum and his men are/Marge breaking up the fight between Principal Skinner and his mom is shown as an episode of COPS, complete with Skinner's face getting blurred out for legal reasons).
Separate Vocations: Marge becoming a police officer after surviving a near-attack from Snake Jailbird is similar to Bart becoming a model student/hall monitor after Snake tries to run over him in an alley.
Kamp Krusty: An adult (Mr. Black/Homer) lets Dolph, Jimbo, and Kearney have alcohol (and both episodes were made before the revelation that Kearney is either of age to get alcohol for himself or over 18, but under 21, which would still make it illegal for him to have alcohol).
Bart the Murderer: Someone runs an illegal business out of the Simpson house (Fat Tony stores cigarettes in Bart's room/Herman has counterfeit jeans stored in Marge's garage [or "car hole"]).
Goofs[]
Marge with white pearls.
Chief Wiggum with black hair.
Marge's car is blue.
Barney without his chest hair.
Homer with a white chest
At the beginning of the episode, Marge's necklace is white. Later on it is her trademark orange necklace. The necklace Marge usually wears is a shade of red.
When Homer is panting after trying to run after Marge, the part of his chest not covered by his shirt collar turns white for a frame.
When Marge is cutting celery in the kitchen, she only moves the knife up and down, not horizontally, yet somehow manages to cut the celery into several slices without moving the celery.
On Marge's first assignment for the Springfield Police Department she is told to patrol "Junkyville and Bumtown." Yet when she is walking down the street the clinic says "Junkytown Legal Clinic." This may just be the name of that specific clinic, not the same of the town.
Although Marge spots the dog not on a leash, she doesn't notice that the person behind the dog is jaywalking.
Chief Wiggum's hair color changes several times during the episode, from black to blue and then back to black. His black hair is reminiscent of his Season 1 appearances.
During the driving exercise, Marge is shown wearing a white shirt, but wearing a police uniform when she finishes.
When Barney is voicing his worries about their beer running out, the hair on his chest is missing. He may have shaved it, yet it's very unlikely.
When parking it into the garage, Marge's Orange Station Wagon is blue. This is most likely due to the shadow of the garage.
When Moe is smoking his cigar, there is first one line at the end of it, but later there are two lines.
