Cultural references

  • Jack Lemmon's portrayal of Frank Ormand is based on the character Shelley Levene, of whom was played by Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross. The character Gil Gunderson, who would be introduced in a later episode, was also based on Levene.
  • The speech Frank Ormand gave to Marge mimics that of Tom Joad from "The Grapes of Wrath".
  • The sequence where the Mafia eliminate the competitors of the "Pretzel Wagon" is based on a scene from the film Goodfellas.
  • Fleet-a-Pita's entrance songs are "New Attitude" by Patti LaBelle and "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac.
  • At the part where Tony knocks over Hans Moleman's hot dog stand, "The Lineman" by Sam Spence is heard. It'll lated be used in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode Mermaid Man and Barnicle Boy, which aired in October 1999. It's heard at the part where Mermaid Man and Barnicle Boy fight with SpongeBob and Patrick, huge fans of Mermaid Man and Barnicle Boy.
