The Springfield Files
The Twisted World of Marge Simpson
Mountain of Madness

  • Two of Cletus' children, Rumer and Scout, are named after Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's children.
  • When Marge meets the Springfield Investorettes, she says hello to everyone except Maude Flanders who seems to not care about that.
  • In a deleted scene, Marge asks Homer to "Name one thing that was ever helped by mob ties." Homer says "The Children's Television Workshop" (later, Sesame Workshop).
  • Mindy Simmons (from "The Last Temptation of Homer") is seen twice in this episode.

Cultural references

  • Jack Lemmon's portrayal of Frank Ormand is based on the character Shelley Levene, of whom was played by Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross. The character Gil Gunderson, who would be introduced in a later episode, was also based on Levene.
  • The speech Frank Ormand gave to Marge mimics that of Tom Joad from "The Grapes of Wrath".
  • The sequence in which the mafia attacks the competitors of the "Pretzel Wagon" is based on a scene from the film Goodfellas.
  • Fleet-a-Pita's entrance songs are "New Attitude" by Patti LaBelle and "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac.
  • At the part where Fat Tony knocks over Hans Moleman's hot dog stand, "The Lineman" by Sam Spence is heard.
  • Marge claims that department stores Macy's and Gimbel's are able to work alongside each other, but Agnes points out that Gimbel's is no longer open. Indeed, Gimbel's went out of business in 1987.

1997 Pontiac Astro Wagon

  • The 1997 Pontiac Astro Wagon is not a real van, but the name of the van is derived from several names within the General Motors company - the Chevrolet Astro van and the Pontiac brand. The van itself appears to be a 1990-1996 Pontiac Trans Sport minivan, but not the 1997 model; a redesigned Trans Sport was introduced for 1997.

A black man with a yellow arm

  • When Marge throws down the fliers, one of the people in the crowd who is African-American briefly has a yellow (caucasian) arm.
  • Cletus with brown hair

For much of his interaction with Marge, Cletus Spuckler has brown hair instead of his usual red hair.
  • Mindy Simmons appeared in the crowd of employees for the power plant, however Homer explained in the episode "Another Simpsons Clip Show" that she lost her job at the plant after developing a drinking problem. Either Homer made up the "Mindy had a drinking problem" story to get Marge off his back about her, Mindy got clean and sober after getting fired for her alcoholism, or the "Mindy hit the bottle and lost her job" story was a workplace rumor.
  • During the fight scene between Fat Tony's gang and the Yakuza, the fight initially began with only Fat Tony, Louie, and Legs against the Yakuza. But during the fight an unknown man sporting the same facial features as Legs but with a different hairstyle is seen running past Marge and Homer while they watch the fight.
