- The title of this episode is a reference to the Eric Carle's famous book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
- The Dutch Leaf Slurper caterpillars are loosely based on Spongy Moth caterpillars (Lymantria dispar dispar), formerly known as the Gypsy Moth, an invasive species known for mass defoliation of trees and for having poisonous hairs. Showrunner Matt Selman was inspired by the Spongy Moths from his childhood in Massachusetts in creating the caterpillar infestation for this episode.[1] Additionally, some news articles about Spongy Moth caterpillars' destructive eating habits have compared it to Eric Carle's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, like the title of this episode.
- The Mary Virgin Moore Show is a parody of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
- It's Always Sunny in Beth Shemesh is a parody of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

- When Ned Flanders is remembering some of the cases when Homer Simpson "borrowed" some stuffs from him, "Land of Chocolate (song)" plays. This is the second time the song plays during someone's imagination (non counting being reused in a clip). First being Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk (Burns to Sell the Power Plant) which was its debut.
